  Tanks

Stainless steel materials are more and more specified for storage tank construction to replace coated carbon steels which need regular and expensive maintenance over the tank life.

Standard grades type 304L or 316L are commonly selected for small tanks.

High mechanical properties make duplex stainless steels an attractive option for high capacity storage tanks. The use of UR 35N and UR 45N grades lead to lightweight designs by reducing the wall thickness (up to 50%) and allows to reduce significantly the investment cost : savings on material, transportation, erection and welding costs may be considered.

Stainless steel grades are widely used for storage tank building in chemical and petrochemical industries, food industry, water treatment plants …

A wide range of stainless steel provides good performance in chemical product transportation:

Standard grades type 316L and 316Ti for a wide variety of chemical products

Duplex UR 45N and superaustenitic UR B6 grades exhibits a better corrosion resistance for transportation of more aggressive or chloride containing products.
UR 45N may be specified for pressure Iso-container

Special grades designed to handle specific products:
UR B26 and UR B66 grades for highly aggressive products
UR S1 for concentrated nitric acid

Tanks and deck vessels in UR45N
Photo Danyard

For years, stainless steels such as austenitic 316L, 316LN and 317LN have been the most common materials for tanks and deck vessels to reduce the ship maintenance costs and extend service life.

These last years, UR 45N duplex grade has been developing rapidly as it provides much better safety margin for transportation of hazardous chemicals and less pollution of food and high purity products.

The combination of high corrosion resistance and mechanical characteristics allows to reduce wall thickness and deadweight.
