Construction
Civil engeneering and structures

Stainless steels are more and more specified in building and construction sectors, both for structural and aesthetic elements, especially when long term life cycle is required.

  Structural applications

Stainless steels and particularly duplex grades exhibit attractive properties for structural applications : aesthetic quality, resistance to corrosion even in coastal area, reduced maintenance, high mechanical properties allowing to design lightweight structures. Type 316L austenitic, UR 35N and UR 45N duplex steels have been specified for several constructions :

Tubular framing of the lift at the Arch of La Defense made of UR45N welded tubes.

York Millenium Bridge: anchor plates made of UR45N at each extremity of the arch.

The Dublin Spire : a 125 meter stainless steel monument made of type 316L grade.

Stainless steel use allows maintenance cost reduction.

  Architecture and decoration

Due to their aesthetic qualities and their corrosion resistance, stainless steels such as type 316L or UR 35N may be used for interior or exterior architectural constructions.

Stainless steel use provides many possibilities for architects offering various surface finishes: mill finish, mechanically and electro polished, sand or bead blasted, coloured finish.

The front wall of the “Immeuble des Bons Enfants”, a building of the french Culture Ministry covered with UR 35N plates.
