General introduction

Special steel plate is used for ballistic protection on a wide range of military vehicles, from light reconnaissance vehicles to main battle tanks. The protection must be as effective and at the same time as light as possible.

Ballistic protection must also be provided for installations such as observation posts and shelters.

Similar steels can be used as targets for the evaluation of munitions.

A wide range of civil protection applications also exist for steel plate, including the protection of light vehicles, limousines, armored trucks, buildings, doors and safes.

Navy vessels have very special needs in terms of the steel used for their construction. Surface vessels require high-performance ballistic protection using steel plate suitable for cutting and welding.

Ballistic protection

Whether for military or civil ballistic protection applications, you need steel plate offering the highest possible protection with the lowest possible weight. This plate must offer an optimum combination of hardness, ductility and toughness along with sufficient workability (cutting, machining, welding...).

Dedicated production facilities and appropriate metallurgical solutions are used to produce steel products for ballistic protection applications with hardnesses from 250 to 650 HB and thicknesses from 2,5 to 600 mm (.098 to 24").

Navy

For submarine hulls, you need steels with very high mechanical performance (high yield strength) and sufficient workability for cutting, forming and welding.

Case studies: Military ballistic protection

Customer need: A ballistic protection solution for integration between the structure and outside panel of an existing vehicle. Technically, the challenge was to replace a 21 mm weight by a solution 8 mm weight.

Industeel solution: Perforated MARS® 300 10 mm thick with an R10 T18 configuration (55 kg/m2).

Results: Tested and approved by an official organization in the customer's country, same weight as a composite solution with a better multi-hit capability.

1100 vehicles are today equipped with Perforated MARS® 300 ballistic protection, representing 300 metric tons of steel supplied over 4 years.

 

Case studies: Civil ballistic protection

Customer need:  A 600 HB steel for high level ballistic protection with bending characteristics equivalent to a 500 HB or even a 400 HB product.

Industeel solution: MARS®300 Ni+ steel plate with a thickness of 9 mm delivered in highly malleable green state.

Results: Thanks to the high malleability of the green state, bending is possible with a radius of 5 times the thickness. Subsequent heat treatment of the bent part, following the instructions of our metallurgy department, allows the material to recover its 600 HB hardness.

 

Case studies: Navy

Customer need: Steel plate for the hull of a new submarine design.

Industeel solution: 80 HLES high yield strength steel plate.

Results: After comparative testing with other materials, our 80 HLES grade high strength steel plate was selected as the best material for the hulls of this new submarine.
